Moto ZA: Gavin, how did GO-MX come about, where did the idea come from and how did all get started?
GO-MX started in 2013. My brother-in-law, Steve and I were just two local weekend warriors at the time. It was difficult to get all the kit we needed in one place, so we’d spend days driving around trying to find what we were after.
That’s when we saw the need for an MX store that offered all the gear a rider could need, at affordable prices. We wanted guys to be able to come here and get kitted. Less shopping, more riding!
Moto ZA: We’ve noticed you at Zone 7 on club and regional race days, with your gazebo pitched and well stocked Fox gear selection for sale. A brilliant idea to bring GO-MX to the people.
We’ve been riding at Zone 7 for years – it’s the best track in the Western Cape – so we were excited when we got the opportunity to take our merch to the MX market there. Not only is it convenient for riders who need to buy gear, but it also exposes our brand to a whole range of riders, from amateurs to pros.
GO-MX hasn’t missed an MX race event in three years – we’ve been at every regional and national MX event at Zone 7 since 2013. We’re proud sponsors of the MX 85cc Class and we’ll continue to support the Zone 7 events in the future.
Moto ZA: GO-MX is based in Table view, Cape Town. It started out in a small garage and has now moved to new premises on Blaauwberg Road, not far from where it all started. A big step forward for you and you company. How did you guys grow?
We started in the back of a small surf shop in Sunningdale and were there for about six months. It became clear that it wasn’t the right location for us. We then moved to a small, rustic garage on Blaauwberg Road and traded there for two years.
As with any fledgling business, things started off slowly. At that time, we were only open three days a week and we had some very, very quiet days. But we were committed and put customer service at the center of everything we did. Awareness of our store spread and we started to see business pick up. It was slow, steady growth, but it was growth!
We started introducing new brands and expanding our product offering. Through marketing and social media, we started to reach more riders and grow our customer base. Then one day we had customers queuing out our door and we realized that we needed a bigger shop!
So, this year we shifted up a few blocks on Blaauwberg Road into a more spacious store, which has boosted business again. GO-MX continues to grow, and now we trade six days a week with our online store open 24/7.
Moto ZA: Who is your biggest clientele? Your online store also does well with you guys covering the whole of South Africa and even neighboring countries like Namibia?
We cater for anyone who rides a dirt bike – our main market being the South African rider. Being online means we reach a wide audience and we have a lot of customers in Namibia as well as all over Africa.
Moto ZA: You really have done well for such a young company – GO-MX was awarded the fastest growing store by Fox Head SA?
Yes, Fox SA awarded us an autographed Ryan Dundgey number board for being the Fastest Growing MX Store in SA – something we’re extremely proud of.
Moto ZA: Having dealings with GO-MX personally, I did get the feeling that you guys mean business and your customer service has been taken to the next level. What stood out was the extremely competent product knowledge. Dealing with you and your friendly and helpful staff was only a pleasurable experience.
Customer service is number one in our books – whether you are shopping in-store or ordering online. It’s a culture that we’ve built our business on and we’re proud of the positive feedback we get. Yes, we offer great products at great prices, but I can say without a doubt that it’s our customer service that has really made us successful.
We make it our business to research and understand each of the products we sell. This allows us to equip our customers with the right information, so that they can make the best purchasing decision for their riding needs.
Moto ZA: Give us a rundown of your product range and what would be the next step for 2017 for the Store? Any possible new additions we can expect to see?
We will continue to stock our bestselling apparel brands – Fox, Thor, AlpineStars, Gaerne, Leatt and 100% – as well as Hyperice and Liqui Moly bike oils and lubricants.
We also currently stock an exclusive MX17 Fox 180 Race kit, which is only available in South Africa through GO-MX.
GO-MX has exciting things in the pipeline for 2017 – so watch this space.
Moto ZA:Keep up the great work and service. Well done, Gavin to you and your staff.
