MXLaren: Charl you are heading to USA for 2016. Tell us about your plans over there.
CV : Going to compete in America has been a life long dream of mine and many other South African riders , firstly I am grateful for this opportunity.
We ( myself , Maddy , Reid ) will be living in Muareitta ,it’s a small town in California where we will be based with our new coach and trainer Tyla Rattray.
My goal is to race at LL in the 250 B limited class , obviously with my shoulder it has thrown a spanner in the works , thus meaning my speed and fitness won’t be up to scratch and this making the transition into the 4 stroke a bit more challenging as I haven’t been on the bike for odd 3 months +
MXLaren: You got injured at the last national of 2015. Have you healed up well?
CV : I unfortunately had a big digger at the last heat of our last race after such a solid season .
I was gutted to say the least as it was a major shoulder op , the doctor told me that I have technology to thank because if the injury had accrued pre 2006 I would of probably lost the use of my left arm.
The good news , I am healing a lot faster than what doctors and physio have told me I would . I am way ahead of schedule thanks to my awesome physio and orthopedic surgeon who have really gone above and beyond with me to help me and make sure I am strong and ready to compete at the pinnacle of the sport we love.
MXLaren: What bikes will you be riding in USA and what is the goal for the season?
CV : I will be on board the 2016 250 Husqvarna for 2016 , as we stand now with how my shoulder is going I am hoping to have my first ride in April , this Is late in the season as my competitors would be a few steps ahead thus my goal for the first 3 months is getting set up right on the new 4 stroke machine and string comfortable at a high level of riding.
MXLaren : will you miss anything about S.A.?
CV ; I am going to miss South Africa , as much as what I can’t wait to be in America I am going to miss home , my family and friends of course and our way of life I also think a big change for me will be American food , I don’t enjoy it too much but I’m sure I will find good healthy food around.
MXLaren : Tell us a bit about your personality and what makes you such a good rider.
CV : I’m a straight forward person, I don’t like to beat around the bush as some like to say , this does at times get me into sticky situations as I tend be slightly aggressive and passionate in my ways and often this does offend people ( I apologize ) this being said my aggressive attitude is also what makes me the rider I am and the ” never give up attitude ” I guess it’s good to have a balance.
MXLaren : Any last words for your fans in SA?
CV : Thanks to all the people who believe in me and my ability on a motorcycle , I will certainly do my best to make SA Motocross proud on the international stage I will also start a page on social media soon for those who want to follow my progress in the United States of America !
